In the early days of the pandemic, the FDA had granted emergency authorization to use hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), and many providers were using it alone and/or in combination with azithromycin (AZM).

There was, therefore, a critical need to know what risk the combination posed in short-term use to treat COVID-19 patients.
